The bedroom was dark and depressing when I first saw it, so of course I had to buy the house. The closets were just plywood boxes covered in a horrible tile. The closet doors were just flat pieces of plywood. We chipped the tile off the closets and framed the doors to give the look of a more substantial recessed panel door. I had electrical boxes added to the outside sides of the closets for the wall sconces I was installing for the bedside lights. This is the view of the wall across from the bed, I don't know why I'm showing the before picture, there really is nothing to see.A coat of paint and the room starts to come together.Once painted the plywood doors really look like traditonal recessed panel doors. The knob came from Anthropologie, they have some great hardware from which to choose. This is the rug that ended up in the dining room. I bought it for this bedroom, but decided I wanted a more neutral palette to show off the antique amoire and vintage barkcloth pillow.Because the side of the closet was thin plywood, there wasn't the depth needed for an electrical box, so I went to the craft store, Micheals, and found round wood placques, that we mounted behind the wall lights.I felt pairing funky fibreglass shades with the glass sconces was really fun and tongue in cheek.I obsessed over finding an antique iron bed with a really good shape and found this one on ebay. When a room is cramped, and the only place to set the bed for optimal space planning is in front of a window, iron beds work great, allowing you to still see out and let the sun in.I wanted to have a queen size bed in this room, but antique beds generally only come in single and double sizes, so I had a mattress made that extended 3" out beyound the headboard on either side, (the traditional width of a queen) but was the length of a doulbe mattress. This is the armoire that matches the bed and night stand in the guest room. I LOVE IT!!!Of course everything here is from ebay (quelle surprise!). I bought the round frame, and had the mirror added.I had been eyeing a bookcase like this one in the Ballard Design catelogue, but couldn't quite pull the trigger. I found its fraternal twin at a local antique fair for a fraction of the price. The pair of little french chairs I picked up at an auction,I'm not above copying good ideas. One of my best friends, Lisette, had nailed hats to her living room wall, and I thought it looked great, so I did the SAME THING!! I had to hit all the cheap consignment shops to find enough for this room. This little piece makes a pretty dressing table paired with the second little french chair. I think the lamp shade is hilarious. I get a real kick out of the 1950's fiber glass shades.I covered the old ripped brocade seats with a simple slipcover that's really easy to make. Just drape soft fabric, cut to fit over the seat, and add a pair of buttons at the back corners. Then make a strap with two button holes that will hold the cover in place, and VOILA!!! a new looking chair.FINISHED!FINISHED!I made the bedskirt out of an old linen table cloth, which I'll talk about on my blog.FINISHED!FINISHED!FINISHED!I love these perfume bottles, so had to have a picture.
The master bedroom was a real challenge, at first appearing cramped and dark. Of course, uncovering the windows pretty much fixed the problem. I hope you enjoy looking at these pictures as much as I did decorating this room.
